The City is Our Museum

A museum is an institution that cares for and conserves a collection of artifacts and other objects of scientific, artistic, cultural, or historical importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary.

Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The continuing acceleration in the digitization of information, combined with the increasing capacity of digital information storage, is causing the traditional model of museums as static “collections of collections” of three-dimensional specimens and artifacts to expand to include virtual exhibits and high-resolution images of their collections for perusal, study, and exploration from any place with Internet.

The Muses, the root of museums, are in Greek mythology the goddesses of the inspiration of poetry, literature, science and the arts. The muses were considered the source and personification of knowledge and the arts, – music, literature, dance, science, geography, mathematics, philosophy, drama, and art.

The purpose of a museum

The purpose of modern museums is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display items of cultural, artistic, or scientific significance for the education of the public.

The purpose can depend on one’s point of view. To a family looking for entertainment on a Sunday afternoon, a trip to a local history museum or large city art museum could be a fun, and enlightening way to spend the day. To city leaders, a healthy museum community can be seen as a gauge of the economic health of a city, and a way to increase the sophistication of its inhabitants. To a museum professional, a museum might be seen as a way to educate the public about the museum’s mission, such as civil rights or environmentalism.

Whether museum purposes favor education or conservation, or seek to reach a wide audience or a specific audience, or create interactive experiences, or recreate experiences, museums are storehouses of knowledge contributing to understanding and appreciating what is important about a culture, to experiencing the community created by a culture, and to creating the experience of community.

The Museum of Vancouver

This is our city. This is our story. Our story is a mix of things like the visual arts, design, architecture, urban planning, music, new media, fashion, popular culture, photography and other influences which have contributed to our social, political, and cultural experience of contemporary Vancouver.

We no longer meet our neighbours in the town square. With the exploding diversity of the city and the pace of technological change, there are fewer and fewer places we come face-to-face with fellow citizens. The Museum of Vancouver can become a gathering place and create gathering places in our communities for a city hungry for connection, and community, and conversation around issues of interest and concern.

We can create innovative environments and experiences which make stories real, excite our imagination, and increase our understanding and appreciation of who we are, how we got here, and where we could go, connecting our community through creative storytelling, and creative experiences, and creative ideas.

The Core Idea

“Vancouver itself must become the focus, the story, and the driver for the museum”

Vancouver is a young city ripe for self-examination and calling out for common spaces for discussion and dialogue. Our relative youth is part of what makes Vancouver a vibrant and exciting place to be, – a frontier where the future of urban living is being shaped before our eyes.

Our youth puts us very close to our past and to our ability to look at how Vancouver has arrived at this place at this time in our history. A time when technology has eroded our town squares and common places and created new and much larger common places and town squares in our theatre of the new world. A time to excite our interest and our creative conversation, a time to create places for our community to create connections and experience community with one another, and a time to create a future for our heritage and create our heritage for our community in our future.

The role of our Museum of Vancouver is to hold a mirror up to our city and lead provocative conversations about our past, present, and future. Vancouver is a city in need of common spaces for discussion and dialogue. Vancouver must become the focus, the story and the driver for the Museum of Vancouver.

The Museum of Vancouver will explore Vancouver as an idea, as neighbourhoods, as people, as cultures, as buildings, as historical record, and contested land, and every facet from imagined and ideal to challenging and real.

This story is the blueprint for our future
